WHAT MAKES SOMEONE A “HARDCORE” GAMER?
Recently, a combination of unexpected and poorly planned events began adding turbulence in my life—I’m in the middle of moving, have another child on the way, promotion/job change at my current job, fighting illness (again), regular site duties, etc.
Because I’m a “hardcore” gamer, I decided it was also a great time to review a game. Then, and this is where the poor planning really shines through, my internet went out. No big deal except that I save all of my games to the cloud. Meaning: I had no way to play the game I had to review (first world problems, right?).
So I booted up my Xbox to see if there was someone’s WiFi I could “borrow.” No luck.
Then, I had to scramble and find someone I knew who would let me come over and use their TV and internet for a few minutes (just long enough to download my saved game from the cloud onto my Xbox).
Once I found someone, we discovered that their TV didn’t have the necessary HDMI input. So we began looking at the other TVs/monitors in the house to see if any of them would work.
Finally, we found a computer monitor that would do the trick and after booting up my Xbox and inputting their WEP key it wouldn’t connect to the internet.
Frustrated and about to give up hope, I remembered I could just take the ethernet from the nearby computer and feed it directly into the Xbox. It worked! I was able to download my saved game and begin playing the game once again.
All of these events really got me reflecting on a couple of things: First, I’m an idiot. I should never have taken on more responsibility.
Second, what is a hardcore gamer? Is the hardcore gamer the person who finishes every game to 100%, the guy who owns a copy of every game made for a console, or is it the person who skips their own mother’s funeral for just “five more minutes,” or maybe it’s simply the person who will go to great lengths just to get their “game on.”
All of these describe behaviors that you could argue constitute as “hardcore” but what does that really mean? Also, is it even something that can be defined or is it more of a way of thinking?
What do you think? What’s your definition of a hardcore gamer and what is the most “hardcore” thing you’ve ever done just to play a game?
